In the game "Age of Empires", there is a Genghis Khan campaign during which you send assassins in trade carts to take out the leader of your Khwarazm Empire "ally". However, wikipedia mentions no such Mongol assassinations or subterfuge. What could this plot point be based on?

During WWII, my great-great aunt was involved in anti-fascist activities in occupied Dalmatia, and was tortured for three days by Italian authorities... but then let go. How would something like this happen and why? Was it common? Why didn't they execute her?
